THE RECEPTIONIST at the police station called for one of the detectives working the case, and he appeared quicker than Sam would’ve thought possible. He was a slender, young-looking man with a thick thatch of brown hair and bushy eyebrows. “Mister Benito?”

Sam stepped up and offered his hand. “Yes, that’s me.”

“I’m Detective Simmons. Can I see some identification? This is an active investigation, and I need to make sure you’re not media.”

“Sure.” Sam pulled out his wallet and extracted his driver’s license.

The detective glanced at Sam’s license. “Your information matches the car’s registration.” He handed the small document back to Sam. “How are you related to Charles Benito?”

Sam returned his license to his wallet. “He’s my husband. The news report said that there were four people in the car. Two were killed and two taken to the hospital. Where’s Charlie?” He tried to fight the quaver that entered his voice.

“The two that were taken to the hospital didn’t have any ID on them.” The detective gestured for Sam and Geary to follow him as he headed down the hall, away from the reception area. “Is it all right to discuss things with your friend here? He’s not with the media, is he?”

Sam glanced at Geary walking next to him and shook his head. “Anything you have to say to me, you can say to Geary.”

Simmons opened the door to a small office. “The injured are both in bad shape. The doctors assure us that they’re going to pull through. They didn’t have their seat belts on at the time of the accident. As strange as it sounds, that may have been what saved them. The other two we found in the backseat, securely belted in and crushed when the car tumbled down the cliffside after it left the road. The two in the front seat were thrown free of the car. They traveled a fair distance down the hill and are pretty battered.”

A moment of relief flooded through Sam. Charlie’s alive. He wouldn’t have let one of the tricks drive his car. He loved that car. He loved it more than he did me, Iggy, or any living thing. He bought it the week his first book hit the best-seller list. “So, one of the survivors is a blond man in his thirties?”

Detective Simmons nodded. “That’s correct. The other survivor is a blond in his late teens or early twenties, as were both of the deceased victims.”

“Then Charlie was the driver.” Sam sighed and leaned back against his chair. “He wouldn’t let anyone else drive his car.”

A comprehending look crossed the officer’s face. “Wait a minute. Charles Benito, aka Chuck Connors. He’s the guy that molested the Arapahoe County DA’s nephew.”

The world that had just begun to stabilize around Sam suddenly fell away again. Sam sat bolt upright in the chair. “The DA’s what?”

Geary’s large, rough hand settled on Sam’s shoulder. “Wait a minute, the kid that Charlie got caught with is related to the DA?”

Simmons nodded. “That’s correct. Do
